Can mold trigger allergic rhinitis in a 33-year-old male?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am trying to figure out what keeps triggering my symptoms. I am a 33-year-old male with allergic rhinitis, and every time the weather gets damp, I seem to develop worse sneezing, congestion, and itchy eyes. Recently, I discovered mold behind a wardrobe in my apartment bedroom.
Can mold in the home cause allergic rhinitis flare-ups at age 33? I have started cleaning it up, but I am wondering whether ongoing exposure could explain why my allergy medications seem less effective lately.
Kindly advise.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have read your query and understand your concern.
Mold inside the home can absolutely trigger or worsen allergic rhinitis symptoms, and what you are describing fits that pattern very well. Damp environments allow mold spores to grow and spread through the air, and in sensitive individuals, they can irritate the nose, eyes, and airways, leading to sneezing, congestion, itchy eyes, postnasal drip, coughing, and sometimes worsening asthma symptoms as well.
Many people notice flare-ups during humid or rainy weather because moisture promotes mold growth indoors. Finding mold behind a wardrobe is especially relevant because enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces often trap dampness and continuously release spores over time, including while you sleep.
Ongoing exposure can make allergy medications seem less effective because the trigger is constantly present rather than occasional. Cleaning visible mold is important, but addressing the underlying moisture source, such as leaks, condensation, or poor ventilation, is equally essential; otherwise, the mold often returns.
Using a dehumidifier, improving airflow, washing contaminated fabrics, and avoiding sleeping near affected areas can help reduce exposure. If symptoms continue despite cleanup, it may be worth discussing formal allergy testing with your doctor, as a mold allergy can sometimes be confirmed and may help guide treatment more effectively.
I hope this addresses your questions.
Please feel free to ask if you need any more clarification or support.
Thank you.
