How to safely manage allergic rhinitis during pregnancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 31 years old and just found out I am pregnant at about four weeks. I have had allergic rhinitis for years and normally take antihistamines daily. I am not sure whether it is safe now, especially with nasal sprays or decongestants.

Will pregnancy make rhinitis symptoms worse, and are there pregnancy-safe allergy medicines I can stay on?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Antihistamines are generally considered safe to use during pregnancy, but it is always best to consult with a healthcare professional before taking any medication, including antihistamines, while pregnant. Many antihistamines, including those commonly used for allergies, have been studied and shown to be safe for both the mother and the developing fetus.

During pregnancy, allergic rhinitis symptoms can worsen, stay the same, or even improve. About a third of pregnant women experience worsening of symptoms, a third experience no change, and another third see an improvement. While not life-threatening, pregnancy rhinitis can be bothersome and usually resolves within a few weeks after delivery.

Several antihistamines are generally considered safe to take during pregnancy for allergy relief, including Loratadine, Cetirizine, and Diphenhydramine. Saline nasal sprays and Triamcinolone acetonide (steroid nasal spray) are also safe options for managing nasal congestion.

I hope this information helps you.
