Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a prolactin level of 30.6 ng/mL and have just received results back on an MRI and ultrasound. MRI came back normal. Ultrasound shows I have a small cyst on my left ovary. The doctor said to check back prolactin with another blood test and should speak with an Endocrinologist.

I am hoping to find some answers soon. Let me know if you can help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I have gone through your lab reports. The high pH of urine can be due to the intake of certain types of food like vegetables, citrus fruits, and legumes. Other causes of increased urine pH are urinary tract infections, medication, kidney disease, and hyperventilation respiratory diseases.

High serum iron and low UIBC (unsaturated iron-binding capacity) are seen in iron overload conditions. In your case, it was most probably due to taking iron supplements for an extended period.

High prolactin levels are seen in conditions such as prolactinoma (a tumor in the pituitary gland), liver disease (your liver function tests are regular, so this is unlikely), hypothyroidism (your thyroid function tests are standard, so this is unlikely), kidney disease (this needs to be checked given the high urine pH), specific medications like Risperidone and Haloperidol given in psychiatric disorders and anorexia. Usually, high prolactin levels are seen in pregnancy. However, it could be possible that the ovarian cyst is the reason for your high prolactin levels.

You need to consult with an endocrinologist to determine the cause.

Thank you.
