Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 23-year-old girl and my physician has prescribed me Inderal and Cheer Up at night for a month. Will these medicines lead to a gain in my weight because I have my wedding after two months and I do not want to put any extra pound.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

While Cefiget (Cefixime) is fine to give in a urinary tract infection. If you are having UTI for more than two months, rather than taking an empirical (experimental) antibiotics, you should go for a urine culture and sensitivity testing. Hope you are not suffering from any psychiatric illness. Otherwise, I do not see any indication of prescribing Cheerup (Escitalopram), Lacosbar (Lacosamide) and Inderal (Propranolol).

Those medications are given to patients suffering from neuro-psychiatrist manifestation (except for Propranolol). Both Escitalopram and Lacosamide are associated with an increase in suicidal tendencies, while Escitalopram also affects sexual function and can cause loss of libido, and can cause anorgasmia in females. However, no effect on body shape or weight gain has been observed with Lacosamide and Propranolol, but Escitalopram can cause weight gain in about 1 % individuals.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply, but I did get my culture done and it came out completely fine but my problem still has not been solved yet. My UTI goes and comes back again. However, my doctor prescribed me Cheer up and Inderal because of my shaking. I am always shaking and he thinks it is because of the stress. Do you suggest me to continue for a month or should I leave it after a week or so?

Answered by Dr. Lohit Chauhan

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

In that case, you can continue Inderal and Cheer Up and if the culture was negative, I would suggest you continue Cefixime 200 mg BD (twice daily) for about 14 days not longer. After that, I would suggest you continue with antibiotic prophylaxis with Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole (trade name Septran) a single strength tablet of Septran has drugs in 40/160 mg ratio, take a half dose daily for about 2 to 3 months. Other remedies like cranberry juice can help prevent recurrent UTI. Also, you can take Probiotic medications like Floragen or VSL#3 for long to prevent recurrent UTI (they do not have side effects).

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
