Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My dad is 83 and was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer. The doctor said surgery may not be the best option because of his age, but radiation therapy was discussed. At 83, is radiation therapy too risky for prostate cancer?
We are worried that the treatment might make him weaker than the cancer itself. Does age alone make radiation therapy unsafe, or is overall health more important?
He still lives independently and wants treatment if it gives him a good chance. We just do not want to put him through a treatment that he may not recover from.
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have gone through your query and understand your concern.
Age by itself does not make radiation therapy unsafe. For an 83-year-old with prostate cancer (growth of cells in the prostate gland), we usually look more at overall health, independence, other medical conditions, life expectancy, and the stage or aggressiveness of the cancer than at the number of years.
The fact that your father is living independently and remains active is encouraging.
Radiation therapy (cancer treatment that uses radiation to kill cancer cells) is often considered when surgery is felt to be a higher-risk option because of age or other health issues.
Modern radiation techniques are generally well tolerated, even in older adults.
Common side effects can include
Fatigue.
Increased urinary frequency or urgency.
Bowel irritation.
The risk-benefit balance depends heavily on whether the cancer is low risk, intermediate risk, high risk, or has spread beyond the prostate.
In some older men with slow-growing prostate cancer, observation or hormone therapy may be reasonable alternatives, while in others with more aggressive disease, radiation therapy can provide meaningful cancer control.
I hope I have answered your question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Thank you.
