Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My prostate has been swollen and painful for the past two days. I am a middle-aged man of 50 years. I have a few doubts -
What is the age at which prostate cancer is most common? Am I at that age?
What are the steps should I follow to prevent or treat my disease?
Once, I got a drop of blood while urinating. What are the blood tests and scans should I take?
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
These symptoms can be distressing, but they do not necessarily mean you have prostate cancer. You must rule out prostatitis and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
I suggest the following investigations -
Digital rectal exam (DRE) is a physical exam where your doctor checks the prostate for any abnormalities in size, shape, or texture.
Transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) uses sound waves to create a picture of the prostate and can help detect abnormalities.
If there are concerns about prostate cancer spreading or if the PSA levels are high, imaging scans like MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) or CT (computed tomography) scans might be used to look for metastasis.
Urinalysis and urine culture for infections.
Meanwhile, you can follow the below preventive measures -
Eat a balanced diet.
Regular screenings for prostate cancer, such as the PSA (Prostate-specific antigen) blood test, are recommended.
Avoid tobacco and limit alcohol.
I hope this helps.
Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.
Thank you.
