What are the prostate cancer symptoms in older adults?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 62 years old. During a routine examination, my internist observed that I have an enlarged prostate. Recently, I have also been experiencing frequent urination at night. Could this indicate an early sign of prostate cancer, or is it more likely to be benign prostatic hyperplasia? Should I consider undergoing prostate-specific antigen testing at my age?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

There are several factors to consider in your situation, including:

  1. Age.
  2. Race.
  3. Family history of prostate, breast, or colon cancer.
  4. Lifestyle.

I would recommend that you undergo the following tests:

  1. Uroflowmetry or pressure flow study to evaluate urinary flow and bladder function.
  2. Serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test to assess the level of PSA in your blood.

Based on the results of these tests, we can discuss the most appropriate course of action for you.

Revert with the answer to assist further.

Thank you and take care.
