Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

While coming out of the bathroom, my mother fell and had an arm fracture. We took an X-ray scan, and the doctor said the shaft of the humerus mid-third fracture and the bone was displaced. The doctor advised an operation and, for first aid, did a splint. Does it need an immediate operation or a conservative method of treatment?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

It can be managed conservatively with plaster. Most humerus fractures are united. So the indication of surgery will be if there is no union after weeks. The only benefit of surgery is that the fracture will be fixed, and she can use her arm from the next day. But, in case of plaster, she has to bear that heavy plaster for two months. So that Is the only benefit of surgery. Otherwise, this fracture can be managed conservatively.

Thank you.
