How to manage a painful, red, swollen leg bump with pus?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I need help with a painful, swollen bump on my leg. It is red, warm, and has a white or yellow center that looks like pus. The pain has increased, and the redness seems to be spreading.

I have not squeezed it, but the condition is worsening. Can you please advise me on whether I need antibiotics or if it requires drainage? I have been applying warm compresses and keeping the area clean, but it is still very sore.

Please guide.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concerns.

You may have developed a skin abscess or an infected boil, which is a collection of pus caused by bacteria entering through a small break in the skin.

The signs you describe, redness, warmth, swelling, pain, and a white or yellow center, strongly suggest an active infection.

Since the redness is spreading and the pain is worsening, this may not heal with home care alone.

You should see a doctor as soon as possible, or send me a picture of that bump so I can assist you further. You may need oral antibiotics to stop the infection from spreading further.

In some cases, if a visible pocket of pus is present, the doctor may need to drain it under sterile conditions, which provides relief and speeds healing.

Continue using warm compresses for 10 to 15 minutes several times a day, as this can help bring the pus closer to the surface, but do not try to squeeze or puncture it yourself because that can worsen the infection or cause it to spread.

Keep the area clean and covered with a sterile dressing. If you develop a fever, chills, or rapid spreading of redness, go to an urgent care clinic or emergency department immediately.

I hope this answers your query. Feel free to reach out anytime.

Thank you.
