Is a root canal needed for cavities in six-year molars?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My daughter has a cavity and was told by the dentist that she needs a root canal on her six-year molars.

Is there any option to fill the cavity instead of having a root canal? She is in a lot of pain.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Well, the condition of the tooth decides its treatment. If the dentist has suggested a root canal, that means there is nothing that can save her tooth but only a root canal. I suggest you go for that. Filling the tooth is only done when there is a small cavity and the pulp of that tooth has not been damaged.

For temporarily stopping pain, you can consult your dentist for medications. I can suggest Paracetamol or Ketorol-DT (Ketorolac) tablet in low concentration.

I hope this helps.

Please revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.
