Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
One of my colleagues has been diagnosed with schizophrenia, and I am concerned about him. He is a great guy and has always been good at his job, but I have heard that schizophrenia can cause cognitive impairment. Can someone with schizophrenia continue working effectively, or does the condition make it too difficult to handle job responsibilities? Are there any specific types of work or adjustments that can help him manage better? I want to be supportive and understand what he might be going through. Any advice or information you can provide that would be appreciated. Kindly help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
He has schizophrenia (a serious mental health condition that affects how people think, feel, and behave), and it is a chronic psychiatric condition. There are chances for cognitive impairment, but it takes years. It also depends upon the severity, duration, and other factors like family history, education, and substance abuse.
He can do all the work that he is still doing now. If he is active, then there is a lower chance of cognitive impairment. He must be functional at any cost for a better life. It is better if your friend can continue medication and not abuse any substance at any cost.
I hope this information will help you.
Kindly revert in case of queries.
Thank you.
