Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I am a 42-year-old man who was diagnosed with scrub typhus after a recent camping trip. I experienced fever, headaches, muscle pain, and a scab-like sore on my leg. My blood tests revealed low platelet levels and elevated liver enzymes.
I have been taking Doxycycline for six days, and while my fever has resolved, I still feel very weak, slightly dizzy, and have mild joint pain.
Please help.
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have read your query and can understand your concern.
It sounds like you are recovering from scrub typhus, but the lingering weakness, dizziness, and joint pain can be frustrating. Scrub typhus can cause complications, particularly when it affects organs such as the liver, kidneys, and heart. However, the fact that you have been on Doxycycline for six days and your fever has subsided is a positive sign of recovery.
The low platelet count and elevated liver enzymes from your blood tests indicate that your body was under significant stress during the infection. However, these values typically return to normal as the infection resolves. The mild dizziness, weakness, and joint pain you are experiencing could be residual effects of the infection itself. In some cases, it can take a few weeks for the body to fully recover. Fatigue and joint pain are common after any serious infection, including scrub typhus, and these lingering symptoms may persist for one to two weeks after the fever subsides.
Regarding organ damage, while scrub typhus can affect organs such as the liver, kidneys, or even the heart in severe cases, your improvement after six days of treatment is encouraging. If you continue to feel weak or dizzy, or if these symptoms worsen, it is important to follow up with your doctor. They may recommend repeat blood tests, including liver function tests, kidney function tests, and a repeat platelet count, to ensure that your recovery is progressing without complications.
If the dizziness or weakness does not improve, or if you develop new symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, difficulty breathing, or swelling, further evaluation may be necessary to rule out more serious effects.
Most people begin to feel better within 10 to 14 days of Doxycycline treatment. However, if you continue to feel unwell, a follow-up test to assess liver function and overall recovery would be advisable.
Let me know if you have any further concerns.
Thank you.
