Do muscle pain and sore throat after sex indicate HIV?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have schizophrenia and I have taken antipsychotics for the past five years. Recently I had unprotected sex and I started having muscle pain, a sore throat, and an itchy tongue. Since then my throat has been painful and my tongue is still white and itchy. Am I at risk for HIV?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Unprotected sex is high-risk exposure. You can take symptomatic treatment for five days. You can also undergo RNA PCR (ribonucleic acid) (polymerase chain reaction) on days 9 to 15.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
