How can a 31-year-old find relief from year-round allergies?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My seasonal allergies have become really bad and now feel like they last almost all year, not just in spring. I am 31 and have had these issues in the past, but now I am congested and sneezing. I have a constant post-nasal drip that makes me cough at night, keeping my girlfriend awake. My nose is so stuffy that I have to breathe through my mouth, which causes morning breath and a sore throat. My eyes are itchy and watery all the time, making me look like I have been crying, which is embarrassing at work.

Over-the-counter antihistamines make me drowsy and do not help much. I have tried different nasal sprays, but they burn and sometimes make congestion worse after a few days. My symptoms affect my work; I am constantly distracted and go through boxes of tissues daily. Allergy testing five years ago showed I react to almost everything they tested, including dust, pollen, and pet dander.

I have thought about allergy shots, but I have heard they take years to work and require weekly visits, which is hard with my schedule. The worst part is that people often think I have a cold and avoid me. I have tried air purifiers and hypoallergenic bedding, but they have not helped much.

Are there stronger prescription medications available? Would it be worth seeing an allergist again after all these years? Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can see that your allergies have been flaring up repeatedly. I completely understand how miserable and disruptive these persistent symptoms are, affecting your sleep, work, and social life. It is frustrating when over-the-counter medications and lifestyle changes do not give you the relief you need.

It is common for allergic rhinitis to worsen over time. Your immune system is in a state of constant hyper-reactivity. Initially, seasonal pollens likely triggered your symptoms, making you more sensitive to other allergens like dust mites and pet dander throughout the year.

Treatment plan:

  • Nasal saline irrigation: This is essential. Use a neti pot or squeeze bottle with distilled saline once or twice daily. It flushes out allergens and mucus, reduces post-nasal drip, and soothes inflamed tissues. It also makes any prescription sprays more effective.

  • Prescription steroid spray: If started, use it daily, even when you feel okay, to control inflammation.

  • Daily hygiene: Wash pollen and allergens off your hair and skin before bed to reduce nighttime exposure.

Kindly consult your doctor and take medicines accordingly.

Preventive measures:

  • Maintain clean indoor air with air purifiers.

  • Use hypoallergenic bedding and wash sheets regularly.

  • Avoid known triggers as much as possible.

Please schedule a follow-up so we can monitor your progress and adjust your treatment if needed.

I hope this helps.

Kindly revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.
