How to manage the side effects of compounded Semaglutide?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I started compounded Semaglutide eight weeks ago and am experiencing alarming side effects. I am 46, with a BMI of 39 and borderline diabetes. I switched to a compounded version after my insurance denied Wegovy coverage. I have lost 23 pounds, which is incredible, but I am having increasingly severe symptoms.

The nausea and constipation were expected, but I have developed knife-like abdominal pain that radiates to my back, especially after eating. More concerning, I have had three episodes of heart palpitations where my pulse raced to 160+ at rest, making me feel like I was having a heart attack. Yesterday, I noticed my urine had turned dark brown, and my skin looked slightly yellow.

The compounding pharmacy dismisses my concerns as normal adjustment reactions and refuses to provide documentation about their compounding protocols or quality testing. Should I stop immediately or taper? Could these be signs of pancreatitis or liver damage? I am desperate to continue losing weight, but frightened by these escalating symptoms.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concerns about weight management and the cost of medications. Compounded Semaglutide can be a more affordable option, but its safety and efficacy are not guaranteed. Compounded medications are not regulated by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), which means their quality and effectiveness can vary.

It is essential to consult with your healthcare provider before considering this option. There are other affordable alternatives for weight management, such as lifestyle changes including diet and exercise, and medications like Metformin, which can help with weight loss.

Additionally, support groups and counselling can provide emotional support and practical advice. Please book a consultation if you would like more detailed information on any of these points or if you have other questions.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.
