Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 45, about 60 lbs overweight, and prediabetic. My primary care doctor suggested Wegovy (Semaglutide) for weight loss. I have seen friends have great success with it, but I am also concerned about potential side effects like nausea and thyroid issues. I have never used an injectable medication before. How difficult is it to start? Also, will I need to continue using it in the long term to maintain weight loss? Please help.
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Starting Semaglutide for weight loss can be an important step toward better health, especially if you are dealing with conditions like prediabetes. It is a weekly injectable medication that might seem intimidating at first, especially if you have never used injectables before. However, many people find it quite manageable once they get used to it. Your healthcare provider will guide you through the process of properly administering the injection.
Common side effects of Semaglutide include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, especially during the initial stages of treatment. These side effects often improve over time as your body adjusts to the medication. It is also worth noting that while serious side effects like thyroid issues are possible, they are rare. Your doctor will monitor you for any potential complications and can guide you if you experience any adverse reactions.
Regarding long-term use, Semaglutide can be very effective in helping maintain weight loss. However, research suggests that stopping the medication may result in regaining some or all of the lost weight. This makes it important to have a long-term strategy in place with your healthcare provider to support lasting changes in diet, exercise, and overall lifestyle.
If you have any concerns or want more detailed information about how Semaglutide works or its potential risks, I recommend booking a consultation with your doctor or specialist. They can provide you with personalized advice based on your medical history and weight loss goals.
I hope this helps.
Kindly revert so I can assist you further.
Thank you.
