Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My 19-year-old daughter is getting compounded semaglutide injections from a college weight loss clinic. She is of normal weight (BMI 23) but convinced she needs to lose 20 pounds. The clinic never checked medical history or bloodwork before prescribing! She has a history of restrictive eating in high school. In layman's terms, what risks exist for young adults without obesity using these medications? Could this worsen disordered eating patterns? She is experiencing dizziness, excessive hair loss, and skipping periods, but refuses to stop injections. The clinic tells her all side effects are "temporary" and sign medication "is working properly." Need practical guidance for a concerned parent of an adult child potentially being exploited.
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
The BMI (body mass index) criteria for Semaglutide (a diabetic drug for weight loss) typically require a score of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher if accompanied by at least one weight-related health issue such as hypertension, high cholesterol, or type 2 diabetes. Individuals who are neither diabetic nor obese should refrain from using Wegovy (Semaglutide) or Ozempic (Semaglutide) for any purpose, including minor weight loss. A BMI of 23 is considered healthy, not just relatively healthy. This medication has not been researched for weight loss in individuals who are not classified as obese or overweight.
I hope this information helps you.
Feel free to ask further queries.
Thank you.
