Sickle Cell Disease

Sickle cell anemia is a genetic disorder characterized by an abnormality of red blood cells, reducing oxygen supply. Under normal circumstances, the red blood cells are round in shape, whereas in sickle cell anemia, the RBCs are sickle or crescent moon-shaped, which gets stuck on the wall of the blood vessels. Anemia, frequent infections, limited growth, delayed puberty, periodic episodes of pain, swollen hands and legs, and vision problems are the manifestations of sickle cell anemia.
