Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 38 year old female. I would like to know about the use of Simvastatin for managing cholesterol levels. How does it work in managing cholesterol levels? What is the typical effectiveness of Simvastatin in lowering cholesterol levels? Could you provide information on the recommended dosage and administration of Simvastatin? What are the common side effects occurring with Simvastatin, and how can they be managed?
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
Simvastatin is a drug from the statin family. Statins work by inhibiting an enzyme called HMG-CoA (hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA ) reductase that inhibits intracellular cholesterol synthesis which in turn increases peripheral cholesterol uptake and hence reduces cholesterol.
The dose of Simvastatin is from 10 mg to 40 mg. Your physician will decide the dose as needed.
Some of the common side effects of statins include fatigue, muscle pain, lethargy, nausea and vomiting, and rarely liver damage. These side effects can be easily managed by reducing the dose and if not by switching to another class of drug.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
