Does high fever, rashes, and skin peeling indicate dengue?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 6-year-old daughter has mild rashes all over her body. It is associated with a high fever. She got such rashes twice earlier that have stayed for seven to nine days. After the rashes subside, the skin around her elbows, knees, and fingertips is peeling. What could be the reason for the rashes and skin peeling?

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

High-grade fever with rashes can occur due to multiple causes. But the more common condition that causes such symptoms is dengue fever. Therefore, I suggest you get her a blood test to check her platelet count.

High-grade fever with rashes and skin peeling, especially on the fingers, can occur due to Kawasaki disease (a viral fever with cardiac involvement). I suggest you get her cardiac enzymes test and a 2D echocardiogram to rule out the same.

In most cases, it is just a viral infection requiring symptomatic treatment. First, however, I suggest you consult a doctor for a physical examination.

I hope this helps.

Take care.
