I have got red rashes after taking bath in public pool. Why?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have a red rash since I was in the public pool and spa. It is like a round shape, but comparing with the pictures of fungal infection, it is not like that. Last night I put garlic juice on it but till the morning I had terrible itching and growing in double size. Can you please help me what can that be?

Hi,

I am glad you chose iCliniq for your medical-related queries.

I understand your concern and will try to help you with it.

It can be swimmer's itch or dermatitis, or may be an insect bite reaction (contact dermatitis) (attachment removed to protect patient identity). Apply a potent steroid for some time along with an oral antihistamine. You will get better. Nothing to worry about, and yes, it is not a fungal infection.

Thank you for consulting me.

You can always reach me at icliniq.com.

Differential diagnosis

The differential diagnosis is swimmer itch and insect bite reaction.

Probable diagnosis

The probable diagnosis is contact dermatitis to an insect.

Treatment plan

The treatment plan is to apply Betamethasone propionate ointment twice daily over the lesion for one week and take an oral antihistamine tablet.

Preventive measures

The preventive measure is to maintain hygiene in the area. Wash with soap and water. Avoid using Dettol and other irritants. Do not use garlic.
