How to manage the side effects of smoking meth?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been smoking meth (ice) a lot, and have been unable to sleep for two or three days already. Usually, I take an antihistamine, Chlorphenamine, and it knocks me out to sleep. I read it is dangerous to take an antihistamine after smoking meth. I am worried. I am unable to sleep. Can I take the antihistamine perhaps 12 hours after the last smoking meth?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

I understand your concern about the inability to sleep after using meth.

Combining Methamphetamine (a central nervous system stimulant or recreational drug) with antihistamines can indeed be dangerous due to potential interactions that can affect your heart and nervous system. It is generally advised to avoid taking antihistamines after using meth.

Given that you last used meth 12 hours ago, it might still be risky to take Chlorphenamine (antihistamine).

I advise you to do the following to help you sleep:

  1. Practicing relaxation techniques like deep breathing or meditation.

  2. Creating a calm sleep environment by reducing noise and light.

  3. Use over-the-counter sleep aids like melatonin, but consult a healthcare provider first.

Kindly consult a specialist doctor, talk with them, and take medications with their consent.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
