Why am I still in pain due to a leg injury despite meds?

Hello doctor,

I have pain in my left ankle and the entire leg after hitting my leg against a door. My ankle is swollen, and I am experiencing severe pain and discomfort. I am currently taking Diclofenac sodium tablets, Paracetamol tablets, calcium with vitamin D3 supplements, and a Ranitidine tablet as prescribed.

The doctor said that the X-ray shows a soft tissue injury, but despite taking the medicines, my pain has not improved and is still very severe.

Please advise.

Since you have not attached your X-ray, I can only comment based on the diagnosis made by your primary consultant, which indicates a soft tissue injury. For a better assessment, you may consider sharing the X-ray for review.

Soft tissue injuries can cause significant pain and discomfort and usually take two to three weeks to heal, sometimes longer depending on the severity.

You may continue taking Diclofenac and Paracetamol (if your kidney and heart functions are normal) for the next two to three days. Additionally, you can add Pantoprazole once daily to protect your stomach while taking these medicines. Along with medication, please follow these measures:

Rest: Avoid putting weight on the injured leg as much as possible.
Ice: Apply an ice pack wrapped in a cloth to the swollen area for 15 to 20 minutes, three to four times daily.
Elevation: Keep your leg elevated on a pillow whenever possible to reduce swelling.
Support: Using a POP (plaster of Paris) slab or at least an elastic bandage can help stabilize the ankle and minimize swelling.

However, if your pain worsens, swelling increases, or you are unable to walk or bear weight at all, please revisit your doctor. You may require repeat imaging or further evaluation, such as an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), to rule out ligament or tendon injuries.
