Can a sore throat and an avascular nodule of the thyroid gland signify malignancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

A 6-year-old has a sore throat. He took a thyroid ultrasound and found an avascular nodule on the inferior left lobe. Please help.

Answered by Dr. Vivek Chail

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I hope your 6-year-old is not uncomfortable and is recovering from a sore throat.

A thyroid nodule in children needs a detailed workup. The image (the attachments are removed to protect the patient's identity) shared shows an eccentric hypoechoic nodule avascular, meaning no significant blood flow within the nodule. Avascular nodules are relatively slow growing.

In the above situation, your child needs clinical evaluation and close follow-up; if required, a biopsy might have to be done. It will help to know the suggestions given by your doctor.

It is known that one in five thyroid nodules might be a severe concern for the development of malignancy, and four in five nodules are harmless.

I hope you find it helpful.

Kind regards.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am taking him to get a formal ultrasound done. I also have the attached image, which was found below the thyroid. Is this the thymus?

Answered by Dr. Vivek Chail

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

The area below the thyroid in the image (the attached image is removed to protect the patient's identity) shared in the thymus, indeed.

I hope you find it helpful.

Kind regards.
