Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Approximately 10 days ago, my son experienced a severe sore throat, for which we gave Azee 250 mg without a prescription. His throat improved. But, about 3 to 4 days ago, he developed a persistent cough that is not dry; rather, it seems to be causing sputum in his mouth when he coughs. We have been using Honitus cough syrup, but it has not been effective. Given that he is still young, we seek advice on a suitable remedy that is not too strong. Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

Since your son has already taken antibiotics (Azithromycin 250 mg), I would not recommend giving another course of antibiotics at this point. But, for his non-dry cough, I suggest giving him Benadryl syrup (Ammonium chloride, Diphenhydramine hydrochloride, Sodium citrate, and ethanol), 5 ml three times a day as needed. Additionally, you can give him Sinarest 250 mg (Paracetamol, Phenylephrine and Chlorpheniramine maleate) tablet once before bedtime. I suggest you continue these medications for 5 days.

Consult your specialist doctor, talk to them, and then take the medications as per their advice.

Ensure that he only consumes lukewarm water and avoids cold drinks entirely, including cold water, soda, and ice creams. Stick to lukewarm beverages like green tea or regular tea, 3-4 times a day. Encourage him to do lukewarm water gargling twice daily.

If there is no improvement within 5 days, I suggest getting a chest X-ray to check for any underlying chest infection.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to ask.

Thank you.
