Why do I still have frequent throat infections after tonsillectomy?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I had my tonsillectomy three months ago. I am continuously infected with a cold like I was before the surgery, and I still have severe throat pain. I understand that the surgery cannot completely stop me from getting a sore throat, but I get it very frequently.
Two weeks ago, I had a viral infection with throat pain, so I took antibiotics and got better. Now again I have a viral fever with severe throat pain. I am tired of this. Please help me find a cure for this.
Kindly help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understood your concern.
Three months after a tonsillectomy, it is not normal to have repeated severe throat pain, so your concern is valid, and this needs proper evaluation rather than repeated antibiotics.
While tonsil removal reduces bacterial tonsillitis, it does not prevent viral throat infections, post-nasal drip from sinus disease, acid reflux-related throat inflammation (silent reflux), or chronic pharyngitis, all of which can cause frequent sore throats.
In fact, if your symptoms improved after antibiotics, it may not mean infection but temporary settling of inflammation, and repeated unnecessary antibiotics can actually disturb throat immunity and worsen recurrence.
Very commonly, after tonsillectomy, ongoing throat pain is driven by sinus-related mucus dripping over the throat, reflux irritating the throat lining, dehydration, pollution exposure, smoking, or nutritional deficiencies such as vitamin D or vitamin B12.
At this stage, you should avoid self-medicating with antibiotics and instead get a proper ENT (ear, nose, and throat) evaluation, including a throat examination (preferably laryngoscopy), sinus assessment, and basic blood tests like CBC and vitamin levels.
Supportive care, such as warm saline gargles two to three times daily, steam inhalation, good hydration, voice rest during pain, and avoiding cold drinks, alcohol, and smoking, is important. If reflux is suspected, a short course of anti-reflux treatment can make a significant difference.
There is no single permanent cure, but once the underlying cause is identified, this condition can be well controlled. At this point, since the tonsil removal surgery appears to have been successfully done, the focus should be on building your immunity. Please follow the home remedies I have advised and observe whether your symptoms reduce.
As explained earlier, viral throat infections can still occur even after tonsillectomy, so strengthening your immunity is essential to reduce how often you fall sick. Take preventive measures whenever you step out, avoid crowded places as much as possible, and use a good mask. These simple steps can significantly reduce repeated viral infections.
Since you no longer have tonsils, a bacterial tonsil infection is unlikely, and antibiotics are usually not required. Please do not take antibiotics without a doctor’s advice.
I hope that this answers your query.
Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.
Thank you.
