Why am I passing blood clots daily after periods?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I finished my period last week of the previous month. Since then, I have been getting blood clots and spotting daily. During my period, I also had dizziness. What could be wrong?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Daily spotting with blood clots after your period has already ended is not considered a normal cycle pattern, and the dizziness you had during the period makes me a bit concerned that you may have lost more blood than usual.

This is often described as abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB), meaning bleeding or spotting between periods, prolonged bleeding, or passing clots outside the usual cycle.

A few possible causes include:

  • Hormone imbalance or irregular ovulation, which is very common, especially if cycles are sometimes irregular.

  • Stress, recent illness, weight change, poor sleep.

  • Pregnancy-related bleeding (including early miscarriage or implantation bleeding) if there is any chance of pregnancy.

  • PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome).

  • Uterine fibroids or polyps, these often cause spotting and clots.

  • Thyroid problems.

  • Infection of the cervix or uterus.

  • Anemia from heavy bleeding, which can explain dizziness.

The dizziness is especially important because it can happen when bleeding causes your blood count (hemoglobin or iron) to drop.

I strongly recommend seeing a gynecologist or doctor soon, especially since it has been happening every day since the 30th.

They may want you to do the following tests-

  • A pregnancy test.

  • CBC (complete blood count) and a hemoglobin test (to check anemia).

  • Pelvic ultrasound.

  • Thyroid test.

  • Evaluation for fibroids, cysts, or hormone issues.

I suggest you please seek urgent care immediately if:

  • You are soaking one pad per hour for two hours.

  • Passing large clots repeatedly.

  • Severe lower abdominal pain.

  • Worsening dizziness, fainting, weakness, and shortness of breath.

One quick question, so I can guide you better: is there any chance you could be pregnant, or have your periods been irregular before this?

Please revert with the answer to assist further.

Thank you and take care.

Regards.
