Is stem cell therapy effective for cirrhosis in a 58-year-old?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 58 years old and have cirrhosis resulting from years of fatty liver and mild alcohol use. My MELD score is not at transplant level yet, but I am tired all the time, losing weight, and had one episode of ascites last month. My hepatologist mentioned trials for stem cell therapy, but did not go into detail. I am really hoping there is something out there that can slow things down or maybe help regenerate the liver a bit. I am not too keen on transplant discussions yet and want to try all the less invasive options first. I just do not want to wait until it’s too late to consider something promising.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

Your key concerns are as below:

  1. Cirrhosis symptoms: Tiredness, weight loss, and a recent episode of ascites.

  2. MELD (model for end-stage liver disease) score: Not yet at transplant level, but you are seeking alternatives to slow liver disease progression.

  3. Stem cell therapy trials: Interested in non-invasive treatments that may help regenerate or protect the liver.

Options to consider are as below:

  1. Stem cell therapy: Still in the experimental stage, but showing promise in clinical trials for liver regeneration. Your hepatologist may recommend participating in trials where stem cells or other regenerative treatments are being tested.

  2. Other therapies: Explore medications targeting liver fibrosis (scarring), which may help slow cirrhosis progression.

  3. Lifestyle changes: Reducing alcohol intake and improving diet, remain critical for liver health.

I suggest you take the following next steps:

  1. Ask your hepatologist for more details about stem cell trials, eligibility, and potential benefits.

  2. Consider getting a second opinion or exploring other advanced treatments like liver-directed therapies or anti-fibrotic medications.

  3. Monitor symptoms closely (e.g., ascites, fatigue) and discuss early interventions with your doctor to prevent further complications.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.

Thank you.
