How to speed up recovery from bad stomach virus?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I had a bad stomach virus last week with a lot of vomiting and diarrhea. Thankfully, the worst of it is over, but I still feel weak and lightheaded, and I am having trouble eating normally again. I have been drinking electrolyte solutions, but I am not sure if I am fully rehydrated. How long does it usually take to feel back to normal after norovirus? Is it normal to still have some stomach issues even after a week? Should I be doing anything specific to speed up my recovery?
Kindly suggest.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
I am glad to hear that the worst is over. Now the thing is this virus normally resolves within three days. But, in some cases, people experience milder symptoms for long periods and remain contagious even after two weeks of recovery. As it affects the lining of the intestine, stomach issues even after a week are common. So, according to me, it is just taking time for you. As you vomit, your body's fluid loss makes you a little weak and lightheaded. Please check the following:
-
Stay hydrated: Drink fluids frequently not in bulk, drink in sips, and avoid sugary drinks, and carbonated drinks.
-
Eat a balanced diet but avoid fatty foods, dairy foods, and spicy foods.
-
Take over-the-counter antidiarrheal and antiemetic medicine if needed.
-
Lastly, monitor signs of dehydration like, dry mouth, dark or decreased urination, fast heartbeat, etc, and if you feel any of the symptoms give advice for hospitalization.
To speed up your recovery, follow these rules: Stay in isolation, bed rest, maintain hydration with clear drinks, and eat bland food or easy-to-digest food.
I hope this helps.
Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.
Thank you.
