Why do I feel swelling under my ribs after sunburn?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have noticed swelling just under my ribs in the upper stomach area for the past couple of days. I am currently on holiday and recently experienced quite severe sunburn across my stomach, chest, and back, which is slowly healing. I also had swelling on my left arm just below the bicep, but that has been resolved. I have been treating the sunburn with aloe vera gel, which seems to be helping gradually.

My appetite has been reduced over the past few days, and I have also been recovering from a common cold that is now improving. When I walk, I can feel what seems like fluid moving or jiggling in my stomach.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and can understand your concern.

The swelling just under your ribs and upper stomach that feels like fluid movement could be due to localized inflammation and fluid retention from your recent severe sunburn, especially since you mentioned similar temporary swelling in your arm that has now resolved.

Sunburn can cause significant skin injury and inflammation, leading to temporary fluid accumulation (edema) in the affected areas. Your recent cold and reduced appetite also contribute to feeling run down, but they are less likely to be the main cause of the swelling.

Since it has been present for only a couple of days and is improving slowly, it will settle as your sunburn heals. However, if the swelling rapidly increases, becomes painful, feels firm, is associated with shortness of breath, jaundice, fever, or persistent loss of appetite, you should seek medical care promptly to rule out internal causes such as liver, stomach, or other abdominal conditions, especially while traveling.

For now, continue gentle skin care, stay well hydrated, and avoid further sun exposure until fully healed.

I hope this answers your query.

Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
