Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
My 27-year-old girlfriend recently switched from Risperidone to Aripiprazole due to the development of mild tardive dyskinesia. She also has polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and is now experiencing increased hair loss and irregular menstrual cycles again. Could this change in medication be worsening her hormonal symptoms? Are there psychiatric medications that are better suited for women with PCOS?
Please help me.
Thanks.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
I understand your concerns regarding your girlfriend's health. The switch from Risperidone to Aripiprazole was likely made to address the development of tardive dyskinesia. However, it is possible that this change in medication could be affecting her hormonal balance and worsening polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) symptoms, such as hair loss and irregular menstrual cycles.
Aripiprazole generally carries a lower risk of causing hormonal side effects compared to Risperidone, but individual responses can vary. It is important to discuss these changes with both her psychiatrist and endocrinologist in order to identify the most suitable treatment plan.
There are psychiatric medications that may be more appropriate for women with PCOS, particularly those with a lower risk of hormonal disruption. A comprehensive evaluation by her healthcare providers can help determine the most appropriate option.
Please feel free to schedule a consultation with me if you would like more detailed information on any of these points or if you have additional questions.
Thank you.
