What causes pain and discoloration in the leg?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My sister has pain in her leg, and it looks really dark, almost black. Could this be internal bleeding or something like hemophilia? She has not fallen or anything, but it is painful when she walks.

  1. I am worried it might be something serious, but is it possible for blood to pool like that without any injury?

  2. Could the color change be a sign of hemophilia?

She has not been to the doctor yet, and I am not sure if it is normal for something like this to happen.

  1. What is the next step?

  2. Could it be treated at home, or should she go to the hospital?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

If she has developed it spontaneously without any trauma, then it is significant. But if she had some trauma, like hitting the table or bed or something, then it is normal.

If it develops spontaneously and is painful, I would suggest consulting a doctor, as it can be thrombosis, which can lead to serious complications. It cannot be hemophilia, which is less likely. But thrombosis needs to be ruled out.

I would suggest you send her to the hospital for all checkups and laboratory tests.

  1. CBC (complete blood count).

  2. PT (prothrombin time).

  3. aPTT (activated partial thromboplastin time).

  4. Fibrinogen.

The most important is a clinical checkup, as blindly going for tests will not help her.

Revert with the answer to assist further.

Thank you and take care.

Regards.
