What is the treatment for penile thrombosis?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am not sure if I have penile thrombosis on the left shaft of my penis. I would like to know how to resolve this and if this is a health concern. Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
It is difficult to say without physically examining you if the vein feels like a cord - then you have a condition called Mondor’s disease. This is thrombosis of the superficial veins of the penis and can occur due to injury from vigorous sex or masturbation or using penile extenders, pumps, or a history of STI (sexually transmitted infection) or hernia surgeries in the past.
Fortunately, this should not cause you any problems in terms of sexual activity or pain. And in a majority of cases, it just goes away with time.
Unfortunately, there is no known treatment for it. Some of the things you can try are:
- Anti-inflammatory medication for a week.
- Cold compress.
- Avoid sexual activity for a month or two.
- Heparin-based ointments for local application for a week or so.
The above may not be very effective as you have now passed three years, and this has come into the refractory phase. If all of this fails and it is causing you significant concern, surgery is the only option but this is the last resort
Thank you.
Regards.
