Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 8.5-month-old son is a cheerful and pleasant boy who is meeting all of his milestones on time or ahead of schedule, but I have observed that he does not mouth toys, etc. Only his fingers are in his mouth. In addition, he has never removed his tongue. He babbles, sits, cruises on couches, and crawls. I am wondering whether this is typical or if I should see an occupational therapist.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

He may not be putting toys in his mouth because he prefers to put his fingers there. The rest of his milestones are age-appropriate. Because you have not observed him taking out his tongue, there is a chance he has a tongue tie, a condition in which the underside of the tongue is attached to the floor of the mouth. This is a frequent issue in infants that resolves as the tongue grows. So, just get him checked by a pediatrician for the same. I do not think he needs to see a therapist. If necessary, the pediatrician will examine the child and recommend him or her to a specialist.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
