Can an infected tooth cause a swollen cheek and tender gums?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have a swollen cheek that feels like a ball is inside, and it hurts slightly when I swallow. I also have tenderness on my gum line towards the back of my mouth, on the same side the swollen cheek is on. I am on no medication. Is this something I can handle on my own? Should I seek dental help?

Please suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Yes, these are symptoms of some infection in your posterior teeth. Which tooth is the culprit? And to what extent has infection extended? Only a dentist can tell after the clinical and radiographical examination. Meanwhile, it would be best to start following three medicine regimes that will arrest your infection. (Please check if you do not have any allergies to the following medications).

1. Tab. Augmentin 625 mg 12 hourly.

2. Tab. Metronidazole 400 mg 12 hourly.

3. Tab. Ibuprofen 400 mg 12 hourly (if having severe pain, you can take it thrice a day). Consult your doctor and take the medicine accordingly.

Visit your dentist at the earliest so swelling may not involve your air passage.

I hope this helps.

Regards.
