What is the possibility of heart failure with daily marijuana use?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello, Doctor,

I am 19 years old, and I have a medical history of transposition of the great arteries (TGA), for which I underwent corrective surgery when I was just 10 days old, resulting in a complete recovery. Following a traumatic incident, I began to use marijuana daily for several months, which has led to ongoing issues such as chest pain, increased heart rate, fatigue, tingling in my left arm, body numbness, loss of tactile sensation, and breathing difficulties. It feels as though my heart is under constant strain every moment of the day.

Given my medical history and current symptoms, I am apprehensive about the possibility of heart failure.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

The symptoms you are experiencing, including chest pain, rapid heartbeat, fatigue, and shortness of breath, along with tingling and numbness, are certainly alarming. It is reassuring that you have undergone several tests, such as

  1. EKG.
  2. Echocardiogram.
  3. MRI.
  4. CT scan.
  5. Blood tests.

I would like to review the results of these tests to gain a clearer understanding of your condition. I recognize your specific concern regarding heart failure, and I want to assure you that the echocardiogram will help determine if that is the case.

I encourage you to schedule an in-person appointment with your cardiologist to discuss your symptoms in detail. Please feel free to mention your marijuana use; your cardiologist will conduct a thorough examination and may recommend additional tests if necessary, along with appropriate treatment.

I hope this information helps you.

Feel free to ask further queries.

Thank you.
