How can I treat persistent trigeminal neuralgia pain near my ear?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been suffering from trigeminal neuralgia, with jaw pain while chewing, for the past 20 days. The pain is located near my ear.

I have been taking Zerodol-SP twice daily for seven days, Gabapin ME 300 mg at night, and Etilaam Pro 20 mg at night, but there has been no improvement.

I would like to know if there is a permanent cure for this condition.

Please suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I am really sorry you are going through this, as persistent jaw and ear pain while chewing can be both exhausting and distressing.

Trigeminal neuralgia can be extremely painful, and it is completely understandable to hope for a permanent solution. While there is no single guaranteed cure for everyone, many people achieve long-term pain control with the right diagnosis and treatment plan.

Pain near the ear and jaw that worsens with chewing can sometimes overlap with TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders, dental problems, or ear conditions. Because of this, a reassessment by a neurologist and sometimes a dentist or ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialist is important.

Trigeminal neuralgia usually responds best to specific nerve-stabilizing medications rather than routine painkillers or muscle relaxants. If there is no improvement after a few weeks, doctors typically adjust the dose or switch medications instead of continuing the same treatment.

Doctors often recommend an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) of the brain and trigeminal nerve to look for nerve compression or other underlying causes. This imaging helps guide more targeted and effective treatment decisions.

For patients who do not respond adequately to medications, procedural or surgical options are available. When performed by experienced specialists, these nerve-targeted treatments can provide long-lasting relief.

Please be reassured that this condition is not caused by anything you did wrong. Your height and weight are healthy and have no role in triggering this problem.

I strongly recommend seeing a neurologist as soon as possible and clearly explaining that the pain has persisted for 20 days without improvement. With proper evaluation and step-by-step care, many patients experience significant and lasting relief.

You deserve comfort, support, and effective treatment. Help is available, even if it takes some time to find the approach that works best for you.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
