Can pre-workout supplements be taken with thyroid medicines?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a patient with hypothyroidism. My TSH level is 449.65 µIU/mL higher than the normal range. The T4 range is 4.47 ug/dL. I want to know that can I take pre-workout supplements? Due to my thyroid, I feel unable to get up early in the morning. I go to the gym daily and follow a complete diet, but I think stressed and tired when I try to get up in the morning.

Please suggest whether pre-workout is helpful or not.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

It is always better to stop using such supplements as they can cause alterations in the body's metabolism in a negative manner.

Please see a physician to correct hypothyroidism as you may need medication.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I take thyroid medicines. Last year, the TSH level was 699 µIU/mL, but I covered the range with the help of drugs, gym, and diet. Then, the TSH level reached 150 µIU/mL, but suddenly, I started to gain weight again.

Please suggest to me what I can do to get rid of this problem because I feel weak the whole day.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I suggest you stop using those pre-workout powders and change your diet; avoid cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, etc. And recheck thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in two weeks.

Thank you.
