Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
Our daughter, who is just 8 years old, was just diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Her fasting blood glucose is 180 mg/dL, and her HbA1c is 8.5 %. We are worried about managing this at school.
We are also concerned about how this might affect her growth and development in the long term.
Please help.
Thanks.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
Managing type 1 diabetes at school and home is understandably overwhelming, but with the right approach, she can live a healthy, active life. A common Insulin regimen for children her age involves multiple daily injections of rapid-acting Insulin before meals, combined with a long-acting Insulin once or twice daily.
This regimen mimics the body’s natural Insulin release and allows flexibility with meals and activities. Handling low blood sugar episodes is crucial, especially in a school setting. You will need to work closely with her school to ensure staff know how to recognize and treat hypoglycemia.
Regular check-ups with her pediatric endocrinologist will help monitor her progress and adjust treatment as needed.
I hope this information will help you.
Thanks.
