Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 27 years old and have been managing type 1 diabetes since I was a child, but lately, I have gained 22 pounds, and my sugars are always above 240. My HbA1c was 8.7 % at my last visit. I have started getting dark patches of skin on my neck and under my arms, which I heard might be related to insulin resistance. Is it possible for someone with type 1 diabetes to develop insulin resistance like in type 2 diabetes? How can I manage this alongside my current insulin regimen?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Yes, it is possible for someone with type 1 diabetes to develop insulin resistance, often called "double diabetes." Here are some steps to manage it:
Managing insulin resistance -
1. Diet and exercise -
a. Balanced diet: Focus on low refined sugars and high fiber.
b. Regular exercise: Aim for 150 minutes of moderate exercise weekly.
2. Weight management -
a. Healthy Weight: Losing some weight can improve insulin sensitivity.
3. Medication adjustments -
a. Insulin regimen: Work with your healthcare provider to adjust doses.
b. Additional medications: Medications like Metformin may help.
4. Monitoring and Support -
a. Regular monitoring: Track blood sugar levels and HbA1c (glycated hemoglobin).
b. Healthcare team: Consult your healthcare provider, dietitian, and diabetes educator.
These changes can help manage blood sugar levels and insulin resistance. If you would like more detailed information on these points or have any other questions, kindly book a consultation with me.
I hope this helps.
Take care.
