Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My nephew has type 1 diabetes. He was diagnosed two years ago and is currently on multiple daily injections of Novolog and Levemir. His last HbA1c was 7.8 percent, which his doctor said was slightly above target. He is also overweight and struggles with staying active. We are worried because he recently had a mild case of ketoacidosis after forgetting to take his insulin dose during a school trip.
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) occurs when insulin deficiency leads to high blood sugar and fat breakdown, causing a buildup of ketones, which acidify the blood. It is preventable with regular insulin administration, blood sugar monitoring, and ketone testing during illness or high glucose levels.
Management includes:
An insulin pump, closed-loop system may improve control and reduce DKA risk by delivering consistent insulin and automatically adjusting doses.
Encourage daily activity and balanced meals to manage weight.
Regular tests, like glucose and ketone monitoring, can help prevent complications.
I hope this has helped you.
Please feel free to reach me again in case of further queries.
Thank you.
