Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am concerned about my father who has been a diabetic for the past eight years and is now 62 years old. I am worried that these medications would cause too many side effects. Also what complications does type 2 diabetes cause? Should my father keep checking his eyes, heart, and foot regularly? Is there a way to avoid the complications? Also does losing weight help in controlling blood sugar levels? I want him to live a better life without any complications.
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Your concerns about your father’s health are very valid. Diabetes management is not only about keeping blood sugar levels in check but also about preventing complications and ensuring a high quality of life. Here is a comprehensive response to your questions:
Potential side effects of diabetes medications: Metformin is a commonly prescribed medication for type 2 diabetes and is generally safe with long-term use. Common side effects include mild gastrointestinal discomfort, which usually improves over time.
Regarding other medicines, they do carry some side effects. The exact type of side effects and their potential severity depend upon the type and dose of the medicine being used.
Complications of type 2 diabetes: Diabetes can cause long-term complications, particularly if blood sugar levels are not well controlled. These complications include:
Heart disease: Higher risk of heart attack, stroke, and high blood pressure.
Eye problems: Diabetic retinopathy (an eye condition that can occur in people with diabetes, affecting the blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye) can lead to vision loss if untreated.
Kidney disease: Diabetic nephropathy (a type of kidney disease caused by long-term damage to the kidneys from high blood sugar levels in people with diabetes) can progress to kidney failure.
Nerve damage: Neuropathy (damage or dysfunction of the nerves, often resulting in pain, numbness, weakness, or other abnormal sensations) can lead to pain, numbness, and issues with balance.
Foot complications: Poor circulation and nerve damage increase the risk of ulcers and infections.
Dental issues: Gum infections are more common in people with diabetes.
Importance of regular screenings:
Eyes: Annual eye exams are essential to detect any early signs of diabetic retinopathy or other eye conditions. Early treatment can prevent vision loss.
Heart and blood pressure: Regular monitoring of blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and heart health is vital to manage cardiovascular risk.
Feet: A routine foot exam is recommended, especially if he has any numbness or previous foot issues. Encourage him to inspect his feet daily for cuts or sores.
Kidneys: A urine test and blood test (eGFR- glomerular filtration rate) are recommended yearly to monitor kidney function.
Steps to prevent or delay complications: Blood sugar control- keeping blood glucose within target ranges significantly reduces the risk of complications. Hemoglobin A1c test is recommended every three to six months to monitor long-term glucose levels.
I hope this helps.
Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.
Thank you.
