What problems can occur if the baby's heartbeat does not get detected in an early scan at weeks?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had an early scan at six weeks and could not detect a heartbeat. Does that mean the baby will never form or is it just too early?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thanks for trusting us with your health care. I have gone through your history and report (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity) and understand your concerns. As your ultrasound shows it is five weeks of pregnancy, so it could be a late conception and you are five weeks pregnant. Get your blood beta hCG level monitoring. Are you bleeding or have pain? If not no need to worry about it. Sometimes early conception cause these findings, take a tablet of Folic acid tablet and progesterone to support pregnancy. Hope to hear from you soon, feel free to ask for more information.

Thank you.
