Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My MRI showed tiny umbilical fat. I thought it was a hernia, but a dynamic ultrasound did not find any evidence of a hernia whatsoever. So I wanted to know if it is a hernia, if it is dangerous, and if I can continue my workout.
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have read your query.
Thank you for sharing your reports (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity). I can understand why this has been confusing and stressful, especially when one scan mentioned a possible hernia while the other did not show one.
Let me reassure you that the ultrasound findings are actually quite encouraging here. A dynamic ultrasound is considered one of the more reliable ways to check for a hernia because it looks at the area while you move, strain, or cough. Since your ultrasound did not show any evidence of a hernia, that is a very reassuring sign.
What the MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) most likely picked up is a very small pocket of fat near the belly button area. This is something we see quite commonly; by itself, it is usually harmless. It does not necessarily mean there is a true hernia. In a real hernia, part of the abdominal contents pushes through a weakness in the muscle wall, and your ultrasound did not show that happening.
At this point, if you are not having symptoms like pain around the belly button, tenderness, bloating, discomfort, or a visible bulge that becomes noticeable while coughing or straining, there is no immediate reason for concern. In many cases, this kind of finding is simply monitored over time without needing any treatment.
You can also continue your workouts and normal activities. There is no need to stop exercising based on these reports alone. Just pay attention to your body during activity. If you ever notice a new swelling near the navel, increasing pain, or a bulge that appears with straining, then it would be important to get re-evaluated promptly.
I hope this answers your query.
Please let me know if I can assist you further.
Thank you.
