Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
My partner and I had unprotected sex, and I took the emergency contraceptive pill (I-pill) the next morning. We had unprotected sex again on the same night. Will the I-pill be enough, or should I take another pill?
Please help.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I am very concerned about your worries.
You had unprotected sex and took the I-pill (Levonorgestrel) the next morning, which is the correct timing for that encounter. However, you had unprotected sex again on the same night.
The first pill primarily protects against intercourse that occurred before taking it. It does not reliably protect against intercourse that happens after taking it. Therefore, there is still a risk of pregnancy from the second encounter.
If it has been less than 72 hours since the last intercourse, you can take another emergency pill. However, taking multiple emergency pills in the same cycle can disrupt your hormones and lead to irregular bleeding.
If you are within five days of the last encounter, you should have a copper IUD (intrauterine device) inserted, which is the most effective form of emergency contraception.
In summary, there is a moderate risk of pregnancy from the second intercourse. Do not rely on the first pill to cover both encounters. After this cycle, I recommend considering a regular contraceptive method, as emergency pills are not intended for repeated use.
Please let me know how many hours have passed since the first encounter. I can provide you with more precise guidance.
I hope this helps you.
Thank you so much.
