Does Vibegron raise BP or cause any other side effects?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 49 and suffer from an urgent need to urinate throughout the day. Several medicines were prescribed by my doctor; however, none of them were beneficial. First, I was put on Oxybutynin; however, there was no improvement. Later, my doctor prescribed Mirabegron, and I experienced minor improvement.

I get up four to five times per night to go to the toilet, and this situation exhausts me. My doctor mentioned that I had an overactive bladder after some tests I had done.

Does Gemtesa (Vibegron) raise blood pressure or have any other serious side effects? I feel like I have to organize my whole schedule to know where the nearest toilet is.

  • Is Vibegron worth trying when suffering from bladder urgency?

  • Will this medicine really help, or is it just another try to see if it works? What has worked in such cases?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

Based on the information you have provided, Vibegron is a good step. It works in a similar way to Mirabegron, but some people who get only partial relief with Mirabegron respond better to Vibegron. In general, it is well tolerated and has a relatively low risk of troublesome side effects.

Regarding blood pressure, Vibegron appears to have very little effect on blood pressure, which makes it a good option for many people who are concerned about cardiovascular side effects. However, it can cause some mild side effects that is mild.

That being said, since you have already tried Oxybutynin without success and only had limited improvement with Mirabegron, I would not recommend continuing to switch from one medication to another indefinitely.

At that stage, it is worth discussing more advanced treatment options with your urologist, such as bladder Botox injections or neuromodulation (nerve stimulation). These treatments can be very effective for people with a confirmed overactive bladder when medications are no longer providing enough relief.

Waking up four to five times every night despite treatment tells me that your symptoms are having a significant impact on your quality of life. So yes, Vibegron is definitely worth considering, but I would also start thinking about the next step if medication alone continues to fall short.

I also hope your prostate evaluation is normal. The important thing to remember is that an overactive bladder is treatable, and if one treatment does not work well enough, there are still several effective options available.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
