How can a persistent UTI be managed?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am going through a urinary tract infection. I am taking the drug Univis syrup along with other tablets. This syrup was suggested for one month. After one month, I was not fully recovered.

Can I take this drug further?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.

Thanks for the update. You are currently dealing with a UTI (urinary tract infection) and were prescribed Univis syrup (likely a urinary antiseptic or alkalinizer), but still have symptoms after one month. Let us break this down clearly.

What is Univis syrup?

It likely contains alkalizing agents (like potassium citrate or sodium citrate) to:

  • Reduce urine acidity.

  • Relieve burning/painful urination.

  • Support urinary tract health.

It does not cure the infection itself — it is a supportive treatment, not an antibiotic.

Why you may not feel fully recovered:

If you had an underlying or resistant infection, the main antibiotic might not have worked fully.

Continued irritation or burning may also come from:

  • Bladder inflammation (post-infection cystitis).

  • Vaginal infections.

  • Incomplete clearance of bacteria.

Can you continue the Univis syrup?

It is usually safe to continue in the short term, especially for symptom relief.

But long-term use (beyond four to six weeks) should only be done under a doctor’s advice, because:

  • It may mask symptoms of ongoing infection.

  • It does not address the root cause.

What you should do now:

  • Do not continue indefinitely without reassessment.

  • Get a urine culture test if not already done — it helps identify resistant bacteria.

Visit your doctor again for:

  1. Urine analysis.

  2. Possibly a different antibiotic.

  3. Pelvic examination should be performed if pain or irritation continues.

Bottom line:

  1. Univis is the short-term for symptom control.

  2. Since you are not fully better after one month, you should not self-extend the course without seeing your doctor.

  3. It is important to confirm whether you still have an infection or if the irritation is now from another cause (like inflammation or yeast).

Would you like help preparing a list of questions to ask your doctor at your next visit?

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
