Can medications help shrink uterine fibroids?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Recently, I developed a lump in my abdomen and have been experiencing breathing problems. My medical history includes issues with breathing, leg pain, and a dry throat. Today, I underwent an ultrasound (USG) which revealed a large fibroid in my uterus measuring 110.3 mm x 87.6 mm. Is this a matter of great concern? Can medication help?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query and understood your concern.

Your sonography suggests a large fibroid. As the size is 110.3 mm x 87.6 mm, it needs to be managed surgically. Since you are only 34 years old, the best plan of management would be:

  1. Laparoscopic myomectomy, which involves surgically removing only the fibroid.
  2. In rare cases, if there are intra-operative difficulties or complications, it may need to be converted into a hysterectomy.

The management protocols largely depend on your obstetric history and the number of living children you have. I would suggest that you visit your local gynecologist to plan further management. If you do not have children and are trying to conceive, surgery will be helpful.

I hope this information helps you.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

Apart from surgery, is there any other way, such as medication, to treat this? Also, is it life-threatening?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

No, it is not life-threatening. But the size is significant and will cause pressure symptoms, abnormal bleeding, infertility, and other issues. Medication will not be very helpful.

Thank you.
