Which antibiotic works best with minimum side effects for an UTI?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am not sure, but my symptoms are of a UTI. It has been five days, and I have not gone to the doctor because I thought it would be treated by taking home remedies like cranberry juice, consuming vitamin C, etc. Still, I have not drunk yet and have consumed only water. So, I want to ask if I should take antibiotics. Please suggest a good antibiotic without many side effects that can cure my urinary infection.

Kindly advise.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

At your age, spontaneous urine infections are common. Also, they can occur after a sexual encounter. If there is a recent history of sexual activity (unprotected), you need to consult a gynecologist or urologist and get basic tests done. If there is no recent history, we can treat it as a routine urine infection.

I suggest that you, please get a urine routine test done. It will confirm infection. Meanwhile, I suggest you can start tablet Nitrofurantoin 100 mg twice daily for three days after meals. Please send me the urine report. If things do not improve, we will need further tests.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
