Does my white clumpy discharge indicate a yeast infection?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have recently noticed a change in my vaginal discharge. It has become white and clumpy (almost like small fluffy pieces), with no odor at all. I have also been experiencing a slight burning sensation when I pee, but mostly only after sex, along with mild itching and irritation in the area.

These symptoms started about a day ago. I am having sex more frequently than usual. Based on what I have read, it seems consistent with a possible yeast infection, but I wanted your opinion and guidance on treatment.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

You have described this really clearly, and yes, your instincts are on point. Most likely diagnosis is vulvovaginal candidiasis (yeast infection).

Your symptoms include:

  • White, clumpy (fluffy or cottage cheese–like) discharge.

  • No odor (important rules against bacterial infection).

  • Itching and irritation.

  • Burning when urinating (especially after sex).

  • Started after frequent sexual activity (can disrupt vaginal balance).

The vagina normally has a balance of bacteria and yeast. Frequent sex, friction, moisture, or pH changes can let yeast overgrow, leading to these symptoms.

You have two main treatment options.

  • Over-the-counter treatment includes antifungal vaginal creams or suppositories (three to seven days course), which directly treat the infection locally.

  • Oral medication includes a single-dose antifungal tablet (commonly used and very effective).

To help you feel better faster, keep the area dry and breathable (cotton underwear), avoid tight clothing, avoid scented soaps or washes, and try to pause sex for a few days until symptoms settle, as friction can worsen irritation.

This is straightforward, but see a doctor if symptoms do not improve in three to five days, you develop a strong odor (which could mean a different infection), pain becomes significant, or it keeps coming back.

The burning after urination is usually from skin irritation, not a urinary infection, but if you start having urgency, frequent urination, or lower abdominal pain, then a urinary tract infection would also be considered.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
